After-hours intake for law firms

The 9 p.m. call becomes a 10 a.m. consultation.

Someone is hurt and frightened, and your office closed four hours ago. Verbatim Line answers. It asks what happened, takes the name and the callback number, offers a consultation time, and books it on your calendar. By the time you unlock the door, the whole call is waiting for you — every word, with the audio beside it.

Dial it from your desk. Be the caller: say you were rear-ended at a stoplight and your neck hurts, give a name and a number, and change one digit halfway through to hear it catch the correction. It answers, says it is a demonstration built from one real firm’s public website and is not that firm, reads out that firm’s own number, and then asks what happened. That notice runs about fifteen seconds; your own line would open with your firm’s name and none of it.

Four ways in, easiest first.

You should not have to take our word for any of this, and you should not have to pick up a phone to find out. Each step below asks a little more of you than the one above it.

  1. 1

    Read what it says

Every question the line asks a caller, word for word, and the three sentences it says about itself.

About a minute · nothing to click
  2. 2

    Hear one call

A whole intake, start to finish, in the voice a real caller hears. Tap any fact to jump to the second it came from.

About a minute · headphones help
  3. 3

    Work a night of them

Open the desk your staff opens at 8 a.m. Four calls, worst first. Read one, mark a fact wrong, move it along, export the list. Then see the consultation on the calendar week and read the email that woke you.

Three or four minutes · no sign-in
  4. 4

    Call it yourself

Be the caller. Say you were rear-ended, give a made-up name and number, change a digit halfway through. Know what you will hear first: this demonstration line was built from one real firm’s public website, and it opens by saying so — that it is a demonstration, that it is not that firm, that nothing you say reaches them, and then that firm’s own number, so nobody who dialled by mistake is left stranded. That notice runs about fifteen seconds. Then it asks what happened, and the call is the one you heard above. Your own line opens with your firm’s name and no notice.

Three receipts, not three promises.

We have no law-firm customers yet, so we will not show you a logo wall. Here is what the line actually produced on real test calls, and where each one came from.

What your caller hears.

These are the line’s own words, in order. Your caller can speak or use the keypad — both work for the same choice, because a frightened person on a car speaker does not always press anything.

Opens“How can I help you today?” — “You can say new claim, existing case, or message, or press 1, 2, or 3.”
Listens“Thank you. Tell me what happened, in your own words.”
Name“What’s your full name?”
Number“What’s the best callback number?”
Then asksThe follow-ups a personal injury matter turns on, in order and only if the caller has not already said them: when it happened, what medical care so far, whether an insurer has contacted them, and whether they have photos.
OffersIt reads your real open times out loud — “When would a consultation suit you?”, then the times your calendar actually has — and she picks one. It is not taking a preference and leaving it for someone to chase.
Reads back“Let me make sure I have this right. You are … and the best number is …”
Is honest“I collect details for an attorney. This does not create an attorney-client relationship.”

Why the read-back is the whole trick

A wrong digit is a lost client. The line repeats the name and the number in digit groups and waits to be corrected. In testing, a caller fixed a number mid-sentence and the record kept the corrected one. If the caller says the name is wrong, it asks again rather than guessing.

It says it is a service, not a lawyer

Your caller is told plainly that they are speaking to an answering service collecting details for an attorney, and that the call does not make anyone their lawyer. We would rather lose a sentence of warmth than leave that unsaid.

What you see at 8 a.m.

Not twelve voicemails. One list, worst first, and every fact tied to the second of audio it came from. Tap a fact, hear the caller say it, then mark it Matches or Wrong.

Open Check it against the transcript to hear it: press play, or tap any fact to jump to the second it came from. The caller is made up, so both voices are read aloud rather than recorded — the line’s half in its own voice, the one a real caller hears, and the caller’s half in another of ours. One of the line’s questions is marked as unconfirmed, and the recording really does not contain it. Marks you make stay in this browser tab and go nowhere.

Your colleagues can be invited to the same desk by email. That part works, and we have not yet proven it with a real invitation, so we are not showing it off here.

What happens when something breaks.

You are going to ask this, so here it is before you do. A line that lies when it fails is worse than no line.

Why this is worth a monthly bill.

Industry data, not ours. We have no results of our own to show you yet, and inventing some would be the fastest way to lose your trust.

One signed matter pays for a long time on this service. We are not going to put your case values on a chart for you.

How you start.

No card, no contract to read, no software to install, and we never ask for your case files.

  1. A 20-minute call with us.You tell us your practice areas and the hours you want covered. We set the line up while you watch and you hear the greeting in your own words.
  2. You forward your after-hours calls. One setting at your phone company. Nothing about your main number changes during the day.
  3. Your first real call is the test. The first caller who reaches it proves it, and you read that call the same evening.
  4. We read the first week with you.Every morning brief, together, for a week. If the intake asks the wrong question for your practice, we change the question.
Book the 20-minute call

That opens an email with the questions the call starts from, already written out. Delete any line you would rather say out loud. If email is the wrong way to reach you, say so in it and we will call instead.

Straight answers.

Is this an AI answering my phone?

Yes. It is a voice assistant, and it tells your caller so. It does not imitate a named person at your firm and it never says it is a lawyer.

Does it give legal advice?

No. It says: “I collect details for an attorney. This does not create an attorney-client relationship.” It takes facts and nothing else.

Will it put an urgent caller through to me?

Not today. It takes the name and number and flags the call as needing a person, first in your morning list. If live transfer matters to you, tell us on the setup call — it is not built yet and we will not pretend otherwise.

Who can hear the recordings?

Only people your firm signs in. Each person gets access by an email code, and you can see and manage who has it.

What if the caller is already a client?

The second menu option takes a message for the case, instead of running a new-client intake on someone you already represent.

What languages does it handle?

English today. We will add what we can actually prove, and until then we will not list languages we have not tested.

What does it cost?

One monthly price, no contract, agreed on the setup call. We have not set a public number for law firms yet, and a page full of “contact us for pricing” would waste your time.

Can I watch it work before I decide?

Yes — that is what the setup call is. You hear the line take an intake, and you see the booking it makes.
